Therapy for Young Adults in Atlanta

The freedom of life after high school was supposed to feel different than this.

Why don’t I have this figured out yet?

The college student and young adult years are full of possibility with new experiences, new independence, and the freedom to begin shaping life on your own terms. It’s exciting to explore who you are and what you want, with so many paths open ahead.

But that same freedom has left you frozen in fear. With so many new experiences, choices, and no clear “right” answers, it’s easy to slip into second-guessing, pressure, or self-doubt. You’ve gone from knowing exactly what you were doing and excelling to feeling lost and suddenly feeling that perfect 4.0 slipping away.

What should feel like possibility can quickly start to feel like a burden and you just want someone to tell you what to do with your life.

For early-career young adults and college students in Atlanta, the pressure doesn’t stop after graduation. You might find yourself in a job that looks good on paper but doesn’t feel quite right. Something is off and now you’re wondering, “Did I make the wrong choice?” or “Do I even belong here?”

Feeling at home in your studies, career, and connections is essential to living a fulfilled life. I help college students and young adults in Atlanta gain clarity and perspective as they tackle these exciting, yet sometimes anxiety provoking, milestones.

Sound like you?

Stuck feeling like you can’t quite find where you belong in college, your career, or life in general

Tired of feeling like everyone else has it figured out

Ready to get help from a therapist who understands young adult life and can confidently help you find a path forward

Worried that others will know how unsure you are

Here’s what we’ll do together

Let’s explore how therapy for young adults will help to build a life that you will love.

Together, we’ll explore your values, strengths, and goals so you can confidently make choices that feel true to who you are. We will work to develop a big picture view of how you want life to look and chart out the steps you can take to get you there.

College and young adulthood is more than just the classes you take or the job that you’re in. It’s also about finding a place where you truly feel like you belong. Counseling for young adults can help you feel confident in the classroom or workplace and in social settings.

Let’s be real - starting over with new friends and colleagues can feel pretty intimidating. But building your own proverbial village is one of the best things you can do for yourself. It’s the support system that helps you grow, belong, and thrive.

Even when high-achieving college students and young professionals know what they want to study or the career path they’d like to take, many still struggle with feeling “good enough.” Impostor syndrome is real and it can feel like any day now someone will figure out you’re not as capable as they think.

That fear has a way of keeping you stuck. Maybe it looks like being quiet in class or hesitant at work as you constantly worry that asking for help will expose you as less competent than everyone believes. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to have it all figured out to belong.

Together, we’ll work on quieting that self-doubt so your confidence inside matches the success others already see in you.

At the end of the day, I want you to know:

Your feelings of uncertainty and overwhelm do not define you and together we can find a way forward.

Questions?

FAQs for Therapy for Young Adults in Atlanta

Will you tell me what to do with my life?

I remember what it felt like to desperately want someone to just tell me what to do with my life as I left high school. I felt completely lost and overwhelmed by all the choices. I hear this same sentiment from my clients all of the time!

While I can’t make those decisions for you, I can help guide you through them.

With over a decade of experience providing college counseling and therapy for young adults in Atlanta, I’ve supported hundreds of people as they explored majors, career paths, and the various opportunities available to them in this stage of life.

My role isn’t to hand you the answer. (I know, I know, that’s not what you want to hear!) My role is to help you make sense of your options, envision the bigger picture, and break things down into clear, manageable steps.

Do you only help with major/career decisions?

Not at all! Major and career decisions are just one piece of the puzzle. So much of being a young adult is about adjusting to new environments and finding your footing.

Leaving home for the first time or starting out in your career brings A LOT of change, and even the strongest, most capable people can struggle with that transition.

You might know exactly what you want to study or do, but still find yourself missing the comfort of what’s familiar, navigating new relationships, or figuring out how to manage your time (and your confidence) in a whole new setting.

And yes, sometimes there’s even a bit of grief mixed in there, too. All of this is normal and exactly what young adult therapy in Atlanta is here to help with.

I've taken career assessments, is that all this is?

Absolutely not! You may have taken an assortment of aptitude tests or personality tests like the Focus2 or Myers-Briggs Type Indicator in high school or college counseling sessions. These can be valuable tools but often students feels like they’re one dimensional. Even if they get a feedback session to interpret their results students often feel like they still don’t know exactly how to translate these results into action.

Counseling with me allows for a much deeper dive and thorough investigation of your strengths, values, aptitudes and interests. Unlike many college counseling or career centers we have the time and space to really dig in.

Can't I just use the counseling & career services at my school?

Colleges and universities do typically offer both counseling and career related services to students, often free of charge or for a small fee. These can be fabulous resources and a great starting place, but the scope of what can be addressed may be limited by time and resources.

What sets me apart is the time and energy available to devote to your exploration. I’ve unfortunately witnessed firsthand just how overwhelmed college counseling and career centers in Atlanta are and students are often limited in the number of sessions allowed each year and in their frequency.

Working with a private therapist for young adults in Atlanta gives you one-on-one time to do the work not only around exploration but also around the mental blocks that keep you stuck.

How do I know if I need therapy for anxiety as a college student?

If anxiety is making it hard to focus in class, keep up with assignments, maintain relationships, or simply enjoy your college experience, it may be time to talk to someone. Many college students and young adults in Atlanta experience anxiety that goes beyond typical stress and therapy can help you understand where it's coming from and build real tools to manage it. You don't have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy — if it's getting in the way of your life, that's enough.

What is the difference between therapy and college counseling services?

Many college students aren't sure whether to reach out to their school's counseling center or seek private therapy. School counseling centers are a great resource but are often limited in session availability and scope. Private therapy for young adults in Atlanta offers more flexibility, deeper ongoing support, and the ability to address not just academic stress but anxiety, identity, relationships, and life transitions all in one place. If you are wondering which option is right for you, I am happy to talk it through during a free consultation.

Does therapy for young adults actually work?

Yes — and the research backs it up. Therapy is particularly effective for young adults navigating major life transitions, anxiety, self-doubt, and identity questions. Many of my clients come in feeling stuck and overwhelmed and leave with a clearer sense of who they are and where they are headed. The key is finding a therapist who understands the unique pressures of college life and early adulthood, which is exactly what I specialize in at Martin Mental Health in Atlanta. If you're ready to take the first step, I'd love to connect for a free 15 minute consultation.
